Wilsden Primary News: Year 3 World War II Day

On Tuesday both Year 3 classes had a visit from “Harry Shrapnel” to introduce them to World War 2. The children sang songs about Digging for Victory, being evacuated and being a child in the 1940s with no ipods, Nintendos, PS3s or X-boxes. We listened to Chamberlain’s speech from Downing Street on the wireless and imagined how it would have felt to know that our country was at war. Some of the children were dressed as characters from the war; Emily was Irene, the teenage daughter who was working in the Munitions factory, Abigail was Mum, who became an air raid warden. Carter, as Dad, was too old to join up, so he became a member of the Home Guard. Libby, as Granny, knitted dish cloths for the family as part of “make do and mend”. Sobaan was Billy, and had to wear a hand knitted balaclava when he was evacuated to the countryside. “Mum” and “Dad” were shown how to deal with incendiary bombs. The children were fascinated with the genuine artefacts that Harry brought with him. It was a great way to be introduced to our new creative curriculum topic!

Renewed lease of life for Wilsden library

Story from the Telegraph and Argus, 4th April 2012

A closure-threatened village library has begun a new chapter after being taken over by a team of community volunteers.

Wilsden Community Library, based at the Village Hall in Townfield, was officially opened yesterday by Bradford councillor Baroness Margaret Eaton, following a campaign to keep it open.

Its closure was announced last year, along with four others across the district, to save £70,000 of taxpayers’ money following cuts in last year’s Council budget.

Since then, villagers have set up a steering group to recruit and train a team of about ten volunteers to keep it open for lending and internet services.

About 100 people attended the ceremony yesterday, when Baroness Eaton cut the ribbon to declare the new library officially open.

Simon Dickerson, a parish councillor and chairman of the Wilsden Community Library Steering Group, said: “We are extremely pleased that we have had so much support from the village.

“Part of the launch event was to promote the library to people who will be using it and the first signs are that people are willing to support it. We want to build on that.”

Wilsden homes scheme rejected

From the Telegraph and Argus, 12th April 2012

A Bradford councillor accused planning officers of showing an “arrogant disregard” for residents of an Aire Valley village as developers were told to go back to the drawing board on a major housing scheme.

Bradford Council’s planning officers had recommended approval for Harron Homes to build 73 homes in Crack Lane, Wilsden, because of a shortage of housing land in the district.

However, senior planners at yesterday’s meeting of Shipley Area Planning Panel failed to dispel major concerns raised by councillors over flooding on the Crack Lane site, a lack of affordable housing as part of the scheme, traffic congestion and parking on the “chaotic” network of narrow roads in the village.
