From the Telegraph and Argus, 21st September 2012

Bosses at a controversial chicken slaughterhouse, who have been accused of blighting a village near Bingley with its “horrendous stink”, have been told to clean up their act.

Chesterfield Poultry, which has a slaughterhouse in Station Road, Harecroft, near Wilsden , has been served with a notice by the Environment Agency after being caught breaching the terms of its operating permit five times during an inspector’s visit this week.

Tim Shaw, of the Environment Agency’s pollution prevention control team, yesterday confirmed two of the breaches were related to “odours” from the slaughterhouse.

From the Telegraph and Argus, 7th September 2012

Parish councillors in Wilsden have unanimously opposed plans to build a new pharmacy in the village.

An application for a pharmacy in the car park of Wilsden Medical Practice has been submitted to the planning department at Bradford Council.

A decision is still pending, but the proposal was discussed at a meeting of Wilsden Parish Council on Monday, when councillors objected to the scheme.

Parish councillor Tony Caunt said: “First of all, we felt there was insufficient information and secondly, we already have a pharmacy in Main Street which has been established for a considerable amount of time and we could not see the benefit in another pharmacy.

“Also, the area around the medical centre is for domestic properties. There are no retail properties there at all, so we felt a commercial development in a residential area was not appropriate.

“We voted unanimously to turn it down.”

Tributes have been paid to a young man from Bingley who died in a car crash after two of his friends were arrested on suspicion of causing his death by dangerous driving.

Alastair Hellewell, 26, known as “Ally” was a passenger in the back of a white Volkswagen Polo car, being driven by his 21-year-old friend, which struck the kerb and overturned as it was being driven in Harden Road, Bingley.

Mr Hellewell, of Harden Lane, Wilsden, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 21-year-old driver of the car and a 25-year-old front seat passenger, who are both from the Bingley area, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, a police spokesman confirmed yesterday.

From the Telegraph and Argus, 2nd October 2012

Brandishing his commemorative baton, Max Schreck is looking forward to telling his baby grandson how he helped to inspire a generation.

Taking pride of place in the wardrobe of his Wilsden home is the uniform Max wore as one of the voluntary Games Makers who have been praised for helping Britain to make the 2012 Olympics Games such a success.

Aged 64, Max became a Games Maker – one of the volunteers who greeted the public and worked behind the scenes during the Olympics – after entering a competition run by Lloyds Banking Group, one of the sponsors of the London 2012 Olympics.

They said, ‘you will never get it’ – and I did!” he laughs.

Max, who works in a call centre for the banking group, never imagined he would be one of its 500 employees given the opportunity out of 2,500 applicants from around the country.

Back at home at the New Inn pub in Main Street, Wilsden, run by his son Miguel and wife Christine, Max is delighted he had the chance to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
